The Business Case for Grace

Happy frigid cold day, everyone.

I’ll keep this concise and focused on what matters most.

Two years ago, my wife underwent what doctors described as “minor” brain surgery. Unfortunately, it didn’t fully resolve the issue. So, after getting through the holidays, we scheduled a second surgery for January.

Earlier this week, my wife and I traveled to the Mayo Clinic. She had brain surgery on Wednesday, and today she was discharged, a successful procedure, grateful hearts.

Here’s the business lesson:

Most things in life aren’t truly life or death. Business usually isn’t either, although we often treat it that way.

I’m not sharing this for attention or sympathy. I’m sharing it as a reminder: we rarely know what others are carrying. Executives. Colleagues. Clients. Prospects. Friends.

Countless people are navigating serious personal or professional challenges while still showing up, hitting deadlines, leading teams, and keeping it together, often without saying a word.

I praise God that the surgery went well. And I’m deeply grateful for the flexibility, freedom, and support system that allowed me to step away from work and be fully present for my wife when it mattered most.

So here’s my gentle reminder for today:

When in doubt, give grace.

Someone you interact with, at work or in life, may be going through far more than you realize and choosing not to mention it at all.

Err on the side of grace. Always.
