Should you ask a prospect, “How are you today?”

I recently read Kelley Robertson’s blog post titled “Stop Being So Darn Polite”.

Key takeaway for me:

Don’t ask a prospect or an executive, “How are you today?”

Replace with some follow options:

1. Did I catch you in a meeting?

2. Did I catch you in the middle of something?

3. Is your Monday morning going well?

All 3 alternatives above  are “Yes” or “No” questions.

The first two show respect to the prospect without asking permission to chat.

Asking “How are you today?” screams salesperson. Don’t be THAT person!
